Vista Released

Posted in Technology and Software by nimad on November 8, 2006

The t’s are crossed and the i’s are dotted.  The sign-offs are complete.  Windows Vista is now RTMed (Released To Manufacturing).  If you have an MSDN license, you should be able to download it from MSDN shortly.  Volume licence customers will receive Vista by the end of the month.  All others, will need to wait until January 30th when it will be widely available.

What a week!  This is when I feel great working for Microsoft.  Truly the greatest software company in the world.  In one week we released Office 2007, .NET 3.0, and Windows Vista.  Each one a giant of a product, each one full with innovation, and each one leveraging the other two.

Things do look great when you look at this one week (and ignore the years of delays 🙂

Startups need to push their products out quickly and build their brand. But mature companies like Microsoft need to build solid products that will push their customers and the industry forward. I am incredibly proud that Microsoft did not ship WCF V1 or WCF V2. Microsoft is one of the few companies that has the stomack to hold back on shipping a “good enough” product and instead ship a great product maybe years later. I believe that is what we have with the current version of WCF. Delays to get the right thing out are worth it in my book.
